Ideas for PDA Integration

For a grant project, I am looking for innovative & effective ways to integrate PDA's with students at the elementary school level. I have read about several different uses at the middle school and high school level and some at the elementary level. Additionally, I've brainstormed some of my own ideas. But, I am interested in hearing what others have done or would do if they are given the opportunity to use this type of technology. I love to hear what some outside of the box thinkers would say on this topic. Thank you in advance and I can't wait to hear what you think!

Pete,

I’m not sure of the requirements of your grant, but have you considered student personal response systems (PRS) rather than a standard PDA? I am testing two classroom PRS sets with two teachers this year. And, yes, we are a high school, but I think the PRS may have a little more flexibility than a mainstream PDA. You may want to go to interwrite.com for some information on their PRS, or do a google search and find some other PRS vendors. The PRS is a handheld that can be used in classrooms for student participation, tests, or other collaborative work. They work best in conjuction with an interwrite pad, or an interactive white board. With some PRS systems teachers can download assignments onto them. Students can take them home, and do the work at home, bring it back, sync them up, etc.

Pete,
I would really like to help you. I did a little research and found that http://atto.buffalo.edu/registered/ATBasics/Populations/UDesign/pda.php contains a number of uses for PDA's with students.

A good article which will provide some great research information can be found at http://www.jisc.ac.uk/uploaded_documents/ACF11B0.pdf

Peggy and Sue,
Thank you very much for the advice on the PDA's and the links to some really good websites.
